I switched my major probably four times before I entered my sophomore year because I had such an interest in multiple fields of study. And now that I have finally found the major(s) for me, I like to dwell on their fashion rather than their textbooks. Of course, these outfit mood boards are just for fun, but isn’t it so interesting to think about what the college majors would look like as outfits: Fall and Winter outfits, of course?
The one thing that has always bothered me about American college, other than the skyrocketing tuition year over year that has flown past inflation, of course, is the fashion! I am currently a junior in college, so I have attended my fair share of college classes to know what people wear – and it’s anything but fashionable. The idea of wearing jeans to class every day is insane for most college students to hear here, but it’s actually the norm in Europe. Ya know, Europe, the most fashionable continent, hosting the fashion capital and designers of the world! It just makes sense.
Therefore, I knew it would be fun if we pretended college was a more fashionable institution and discussed the outfits you would typically wear depending on your major!
The English Major
Oh to be an English, something I widely considered because of my vast love for literature and reading. The English major is always focused on their next paper or finishing the next book on their TBR. Thus, they always have a coffee or tea by their side to keep them awake in the late hours of the night. They claim to love classics like Dickens, even though they probably only own Fantasy series like Percy Jackson and A Court of Thorns and Roses on their bookshelves. Their clothes always smell like the library, they constantly write dialogue mentally, and they love to stay up past 2 A.M. reading.
The English major takes a spin on what you would imagine the typical English professor to wear: sweater vests, plaid, sweaters, loafers, button-downs, and always a bag. Either a tote bag or satchel, to carry around all their papers and books, of course. Basically, think of light and dark academia or movies like Dead Poets Society. The English major focuses on the same pieces but styles them differently. For example, sweater vests are worn on top of oversized button-downs. Turtlenecks are used as pieces to layer rather than being the main focus of an outfit. And brown and white will enter every outfit color palette, somehow. This college major takes inspiration from a typical professor’s wardrobe by utilizing softer, more comfortable pieces. Since they are always hunched over at the library working and need the comfort of a sweater vest.
The Marketing Major
Marketing majors are 50% creative and 50% analytical. They are always following upcoming marketing trends, the newest social media features, learning new data analyzing software, and more. They carry a laptop charger with them everywhere they go, overthink their Instagram feed, own several blazers from Zara, and probably joined the major because they loved Samantha Jones from Sex and the City. And I know all of this because I’m a marketing major!
Marketing is one of the most popular majors in the business field, alongside Finance. Since marketing is such a popular sector in the business world, it’s obvious that we immediately think of the stereotypical businesswoman outfit when thinking of the attire. The typical businesswoman often wore a matching blazer and pencil skirt, with a white button-down underneath, and short heels. But that is not going to work for today’s era of fashion. Instead, a fashionable marketing major would wear tailored dress pants, straight jeans, lots of bodysuits, oversized blazers, white sneakers or booties. Basically elevating the typical pantsuit often seen on businessmen, but made classier and trendier for a marketing student. Think Dakota Johnson’s street style and her fashion in Fifty Shades Freed.
The Criminal Justice Major
The criminal justice major never stops thinking and it gives their personality a mysterious air. They are encapsulated by their class lectures; pulling their hair into a clip and setting notebooks in front of them like a witch preparing a spell, determined to learn. They listen to crime podcasts for pure enjoyment and are obsessed with Law & Order. They’re often perceived as Scorpios because of their constant overthinking and suspicions of others. But that’s only because they swear they have a sixth sense and gut feeling of people’s intentions.
Criminal justice majors often go on to careers involving crime and investigation. And that’s how I curated this mood board. These outfits move around pieces I imagine a crime-fighting woman wearing — a boujee* crime-fighting woman. I imagine lots of black, grey, and tan, as well as leather and denim pieces. Slim black tops, and crewnecks would be a must in their wardrobe. Alongside flare and wide-legged jeans, leather jackets and pants, trench coats, and comfortable heels. Basically, imagine an edgy cop from the 70s that gets style inspiration from The Matrix. Their fashion tends to emulate that of Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid’s sharp streetwear. The criminal justice major owns every designer heel you wish you had, along with the latest sneaker drops and the nicest leather boots.
The Education Major
Education majors are the ones that truly never stop learning. They’re always absorbing new information on the subject they wish to teach, as well as the developmental psychology of the human brain. They love to teach, making them the best person to sit beside in class because they will always offer you help. They wear the same dainty jewelry every day and are mentally attached to their cardigans and sweaters.
When thinking of education majors, we obviously consider the outfits our past teachers have worn. Thus, my mind goes straight to long sleeves and long skirts. Female teachers stereotypically wear modest clothing to abide by school dress codes. This often includes those full coverage items like long sleeve tops. When I picture a fashionable education major utilizing that idea, I imagine they would often wear fitted midi skirts, ribbed sweaters, cardigans, dress pants, and mules, as pictured above. Education majors would take modest outfits often worn by teachers, and focus their color palette on neutrals and fewer patterns. Wearing richer and warmer fabrics like tweed (because classrooms are always cold), and clothes that look dapper because they’re form-fitting.
The Biology Major
Biology majors truly never stop studying; they always have flashcards on hand, beautifully written notes, Quizlet on their phones, and pencils in their purses. They’re doing homework in between their labs and attending study groups Thursday nights. Fashion is not their main focus, because when you’re studying, who has time for picking out an outfit? However, this blog post is focusing on the hypothetical scenario if these college majors had the sleep, time, and money for fashion.
Thus, I imagine the biology major to dress in a sophisticated, but casual way — very Parisian. Biology majors are always on top of their tasks, taking their academics very seriously for med school. Thus, they would take their fashion just as seriously. They would switch out their lab coats and closed-toe shoes for straight and flare jeans, silk midi dresses, cashmere sweaters, and many white button-downs (the quintessential Parisian item). STEM has historically been male-dominated, even with the increase of women in STEM. Therefore, female biology majors would take back the typical “male clothing” like button-downs. However, they would style them in refined ways by adding delicate jewelry, softer fabrics, and heels.
The Art Major
Art majors are expressive, creative (duh), and fun, of course. They are constantly starting projects and never finishing them because their work never lives up to their standards. They always carry around a notebook in their purse in case inspiration comes to mind. Their Pinterest boards are packed with possible projects, their dorm walls are covered in art prints from the Romanticism movement, and they probably love shows/movies like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mamma Mia, and Luca. Also, they are always running late and never making their deadlines because creativity just can’t be rushed.
Therefore, a fashionable art major would dress like a mixture of Young Donna from Mamma Mia and Carrie from Sex and the City. Bold colors are always the highlight of their looks, and unique fabrics are always layered for a juxtaposition effect. Since this is a fall/winter mood board, art majors wear bold burgundies, rich reds, sage greens, dreamy blues, and taupes. Art majors don’t stick to just one style or aesthetic, but instead, they follow the constantly changing high-fashion street style. Nothing is off the table: overalls, midi skirts, maxi dresses, pea coats, sweats, pantsuits, etc. It all revolves around street style trends and constant colors.
