I love sitcoms, I lived off of them as a kid and have loved them ever since. Born in 2000, I lived off of the most popular 80s and 90s sitcoms; from Boy Meets World to Full House. However, I have to say my favorite has always been The Nanny. The humor, family dynamic, and light-hearted conflicts made the show for me – and of course, Fran Fine’s fashion. During my time in quarantine, I started rewatching The Nanny from the beginning and it’s quickly becoming my favorite show (especially now that I understand all of the jokes).
Rewatching the show as an adult is not only rekindling my love for the sitcom but making me realize how iconic Fran’s outfits truly are. We discuss fashion in shows like Friends, Sex and the City, and Gossip Girl because of their focus on fashion. And it makes sense because the protagonists’ careers are associated with fashion. For example, Rachel Green as a personal shopper, Carrie Bradshaw works as a blogger/columnist, and Blair Waldorf is a fashion designer. But Fran Fine works as a nanny in the show so fashion is not expected to be the main focus for her character. Yet she brings majorly iconic outfits in every episode as someone who is not necessarily expected to be stylish.
Throughout all six seasons, Nanny Fine brings outfits from the runway to the city. While many of her outfits imitated the most popular trends at that time. The majority of her outfits are timeless, still seen in fashion today, and idolized. We see her outfits replicated by celebrities because they’re so easy to recreate, yet so impressionable and bold. Therefore, here’s a blog post of me ranting about the iconic Fran Fine outfits you need in your closet. AKA, me convincing you to love The Nanny as much as I do.
Disclaimer: I did a lot of digging and research to find where Fran’s outfits were from, and @whatfranwore on Instagram was by far the most helpful. I just wanted to give some credit to her Instagram account – I highly recommend following her if you love The Nanny as much as I do because she identifies Fran’s outfits across all six seasons.
Byblos Fall/Winter 1992
The spring color palette and feather trim on the sleeves are to-die-for. Maybe it’s my obsession with spring colors right now, or the fact that it looks like this came straight out of Cher Horowitz’s closet, but I’d die for this outfit.
Jacquemus Fall 2020 Color Palette
I’m not one for oversized faux-fur coats, but on Fran, I love it. This monochrome outfit reminds me of Jacquemus’s Fall 2020 runway show because of its fully neutral lookbook. This photo is just a whole mood though, making it one of my favorites.
Michael Hoban North Beach Motorcycle Jacket
Something the stylist for The Nanny did best, was taking an extremely simple black outfit and making it memorable. This black mini skirt and turtleneck are a timeless combo, but the addition of Michael Hoban’s North Beach Motorcycle Jacket makes it iconic.
Fendi 1997
Fendi is mostly known for its accessories, like its leather handbags and monogram sunglasses. Therefore, I was so surprised to find out that this purple co-ord is Fendi-made. The shimmery fabric, the shade of purple, and the skirt are absolutely breathtaking. It matches Fran’s personal style and personality perfectly, and makes us wish we all had it in our closets.

Chanel Spring/Summer 1995
This classic Chanel look hit the runway in Chanel’s Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collection in 1995. I’ve always loved Chanel for its preppy jackets, patterns, and mini skirts. Fran actually wears Chanel throughout all six seasons of the show, but this look is the most brand-identifiable.
Hervé Léger Dress & Moschino Purse
This is by far my favorite look of Fran’s. Black mini dresses are a classic piece every woman should own because they’re timeless amid the trends. Nanny Fine’s LBD is from Hervé Léger, a French fashion house known for its gorgeous dresses. We don’t often see Fran in anything but bright colors and bold patterns, so this black dress was bound to make a statement. However, this look is most popular for the Moschino heart purse, and why wouldn’t it be? Unfortunately, the bag is was discontinued years ago – queue the tears.
Chanel 1992 Inspired
Maybe I’m just a sucker for an all-black outfit, but I absolutely love this! While this outfit doesn’t come from a designer, it does take inspiration from Chanel’s iconic Haute Couture dress (if you don’t know what I’m referring to: see Christy Turlington in the Chanel cocktail dress in the Spring/Summer show in 1992). And if you still don’t know what I’m talking about, then you most likely saw it on Lily-Rose Depp at the 2019 Met Gala. That Chanel dress is the dress of my dreams – if wearing black to your own wedding was normal, that’s what I’d be wearing. The accent of the gold chain and brooch with Fran’s black shorts and turtleneck are the perfect combo.
Roots Sporting Goods Sweats
I felt like this outfit/scene made the most sense to close out this post because we seem to all be feeling like this since the pandemic started. A classic set of sweats and a tub of ice cream surely never fails either.
