From pants to peacoats, and booties to blazers; fall and winter clothes shopping can feel neverending. It’s difficult to predict what fashion piece will be the next “diamond of the season” when we’re still buying pieces from last season. Last fall and winter it was faux leather pants that were popping up on our Instagram feeds after every refresh, along with everything Aritzia, especially their trousers. But this year the most adored fashion piece for the fall and winter is a French girl staple, coveted by lovers of capsule wardrobes: the midi skirt.
This doesn’t come as a surprise when you consider today’s trends. Comfort is no longer being sacrificed in order to look good. Consumers seek comfortable, but stylish items in their wardrobes now and the midi skirt is the epitome of that.
Not only is it comfortable, but it works with everything. I’m not joking when I say everything either; you can pull out a concert tee from high school and it would work with this. It’s an investment piece that you don’t have to stuff in the back of your closet when the seasons change because it’s transitional.
Transitioning your daily outfits between seasons can become a hot mess very quickly. Midi skirts are the happy medium between wearing a maxi dress and a mini skirt. Sometimes a maxi dress feels too coastal grandmother for the fall. While a mini skirt may not feel formal enough for certain occasions. Then enters the midi skirt: pair it with sweaters, long sleeve bodysuits, sheer tights, and knee-high boots for endless fall and winter outfits.
The cool girl herself, Emma Chamberlain, photographed below, pairs her midi skirt with loafers, calf-length socks, and a turtleneck; an outfit that works for formal occasions and simple nights out with friends.
