From my (unnecessarily frequent) time on social media and blogs over the past few years, I’ve realized that the French girls are the It girls. Every French girl has taken over Pinterest fashion boards with their short heels, black sunglasses, and bangs.
The French girls just seem to know how to dress every season; we’re all just living in their world. You won’t see them buying new clothes every month searching for coupons before the Aritzia sale ends because they already know how to endlessly style what they currently own.
So how do they do it? you may ask…
Let’s go over how every French girl puts together a Pinterest-worthy fall outfit so that we stop spending four hours a day on Pinterest searching for outfit ideas.
1. Layering
Layering is the secret tip that will keep you from overpacking on a winter vacation and from your closet bursting behind its doors. The French girls will never be seen in the same exact outfit, but they’ll always be wearing the same clothes year-round. When you layer clothes, you get more use out of them and more outfits.
The key is to layer simple pieces with coats, blazers, cardigans, and even purses. You most likely won’t be seeing them in bulky winter coats because they are layering long sleeves and sweaters underneath long coats—which we’ll get to.
Tip: before you press “place order,” make sure it’s something that you can layer; can it be worn under a coat or with a button-down? Can a dress or sweater be layered over it? Or a long sleeve be layered under it? If the answer is no…maybe find a coupon first.
2. Color Scheme
This is probably incorrect, but French girls, in our opinion, invented the capsule wardrobe. By focusing on a color scheme/palette as you purchase clothing, you make it easier to create outfits because matching clothing becomes seamless. The French girl fashion color scheme in the fall and winter will consist of rich browns, creamy whites, blacks, burnt oranges, and dark wash blues in denim. Stick to a color scheme and you’ll have yourself a Pinterest-worthy fall outfit every day.
3. Own a Long Coat
The most well-known French girl fashion tip of all, that some still happen to forget, is the long coat. A long coat will transform any outfit, not only keeping you warm, but fashionable too. Automatically making you look like miss Anna Wintour instead of someone that would be criticized by Anna Wintour—can you tell we’ve been rewatching The Devil Wears Prada?
4. Pair it with a Pair of Booties
Not the booties Jess from New Girl would wear—we love Jess, just not her shoes—but rather booties that have a heel and cover more than just your ankle. They’re an investment that you’ll hold onto for years because they never go out of style.
5. Simple Accessories
Black sunglasses, claw clips, gold hoops, and leather purses. That’s it. That’s the tweet.
6. Basic Pieces
If the majority of your credit card bill is filled with clothing purchases—no judgement—maybe you’re not buying the right clothes. Focus your purchases on simple, basic pieces that don’t follow trends. So stay away from trendy colors and tops that are Y2K, or else you’ll most likely end up with clothes that won’t work for more than one outfit.
Find: turtlenecks, bodysuits, jeans, long coats, and cardigans; versatile and timeless items.
7. Focus on the Bottoms
To truly bring out your inner French girl, pick out a plain top, and pay attention to the bottoms. Don’t reach for the leggings or skinny jeans, but rather the wide-leg trousers and straight jeans.
8. Comfort!
Think jeans, sweaters, cardigans, scarves, and boots; these are all items that have value in your wardrobe because they surpass trends and are made of durable material—denim, leather, etc.—and are comfortable. The last thing you want to be doing is investing in clothes that aren’t comfortable because then you’ll never wear them! French fashion focuses on comfort first. It’s all about finding those nicer pieces, like a good pair of jeans rather than leggings, that look nice and bring comfort.
