Now, this may be crazy to believe, but Spring and Summer are just around the corner. Therefore, it’s time to prepare for the Spring and Summer 2021 fashion trends (which you’ll be obsessed BTW). Today, we’re discussing the most influential trends that you’ll see this season, and the pieces to purchase if you’re looking to stay up-to-date on fashion this season. Fashion is constantly pulling inspiration from the past, and we’ve seen several trends and styles over the past few years come from 90s fashion. And this year, fashion is vastly inspired and motivated by 60s and 70s fashion, and you’ll be as obsessed with it as I am by the end of this post.

Crochet and Knitwear
I would like to credit Harry Styles with the comeback of funky sweaters, patterned knitwear and sweater vests. Crochet and knitwear are materials we tend to see in the fall and winter for obvious reasons: cold weather. However, because of quarantine, comfortable materials are lived in day-to-day now, so crochet clothing and knitwear make sense. I’m looking forward to this level of comfort being carried into the warmer seasons.

Wide-Leg Pants and Trousers
Gen Z has spoken (which I guess includes me), and they have claimed that skinny jeans are officially out of style. Ever since mom jeans came back in style a few years ago, I felt this coming, but I never knew that it would be official. Like, official to the point that it’s been talked about on the Today Show – where they report recent politics and weather – while I eat my breakfast. As weird it is to think skinny jeans are not considered as fashionable as they used to be, it is actually a relief that they’re not the traditional denim everyone’s wearing now – because wow they’re uncomfortable. Which means, oversized pants are extremely popular this year; this category includes straight jeans, flared pants, baggy jeans, and wide-leg pants. You should expect to see anything but skinny jeans on celebrities and influencers this spring and summer.

Silk Skirts and Dresses
Satin and silk are two gorgeous materials that always look fashionable. Silk consistently looks expensive, chic, and sophisticated. These dresses and skirts look good with everything, and can be purchased in vibrant, jewel-tone colors. They offer a super romantic vibe and are everlasting pieces in any wardrobe.

Milkmaid Dresses
Milkmaid dresses were gaining popularity towards the end of Summer 2020, so it’s no surprise that they’re back this season. It’s pretty hard to not be obsessed with this trend because these dresses are gorgeous. They scream, “I’m going for a run in a flower field where I’ll meet my prince (or princess) charming on horseback,” don’t you think? I expect to see a picture of you wearing a milkmaid dress in a field on your Instagram this year.

Open Backs
I am obsessed with open back everything. Open back bodysuits, dresses, sweaters – I want them all. Cut-out and open-backs in tops have been extremely trendy lately. They add a touch of style to a plain piece and make for a really simple way to add uniqueness to any look.

Puffy Sleeves (aka Balloon Sleeves)
I will personally not be partaking in the puffy sleeve trend because I look ridiculous in them, but wow they are gorgeous. Similar to open back tops and dresses, puffy sleeves just add a little something to a basic or plain piece. Puffy sleeves have always existed, but they’ve grown in popularity the past few months because of their attachment to milkmaid dresses. Pretty much any milkmaid dress you see will have puffy sleeves – and the sleeves are now solidifying their way onto tops.

Vibrant Colors and Patterns
I never wear color, and if you look at my Instagram, you’ll notice that pretty quickly. But I am all for the gorgeous colors that are everywhere this season. House of Sunny takes the crown for not only catapulting this trend but for running with it. Their pieces are all over Pinterest and TikTok right now. This trend is definitely a tribute to 60s retro and 70s disco; both eras were all about vibrant colors, and bold and funky patterns. Colors expected to make an impact not only this season, but this year, are cobalt blue, marigold, rust, cerulean, and green ash.

Bikini Fashion
A few of this year’s fashion trends actually revolve around what you’ll be wearing to the beach. Bikini wraps (aka, a pareo), and bikini tops, and button-downs are two combos you’ll see trending this summer. Bikini wraps have existed for quite a while and have evolved over fashion trends. This year, focus on shorter bikini wraps that match the color/pattern of your swimsuit. If you don’t love the pareo trend, button-downs paired with a bikini top will be just as popular this year. I absolutely love this trend, it’s functional and avoids being “trendy” so it won’t look tacky in years to come.
Halter Tops
The cold shoulder top and single trap are a trend of the past because halter tops are taking over your Instagram feed everywhere. I usually don’t love halter tops, because I felt always looked ridiculous in them, however, I may need to try them out again. Halter tops have made an appearance in every decade of fashion, but they are most synonymous with Marilyn Monroe’s subway grate photo. While that famous photo of Marilyn Monroe was taken in 1955, this year’s halter top trend comes from the 70s and 90s. Halter tops with a spaghetti strap, or straps that crossover will be majorly on-trend this year.
