Streetwear Fashion has been massively growing in popularity for many reasons. One of the largest reasons is the growth in y2k fashion. If you don’t know what y2k fashion is, it’s basically the early 2000s fashion, and it’s extremely popular this year. In the early 2000s and 90s, if you look at men’s fashion, the genre of hip-hop had a huge influence on fashion. It was branded by oversized clothing, specifically loose-fitted jeans and extremely large t-shirts. Often accessorized by gold chains, baseball hats, and sneakers.
Streetwear fashion in 2020 has pulled inspiration from the male side in y2k fashion, and it has become extremely trendy. You can easily see the 90s and early 2000s hip-hop style in today’s streetwear. 2020 streetwear, while it takes inspiration from the past, manages to stay fashion-forward and stylish. It’s an extremely fun fashion genre because it has a masculine foundation, but women have made it their own. Why wouldn’t you want to take part in a genre of fashion like that? 2020 Streetwear fashion makes a play on 90s masculinity, and I am going to show you how to wear streetwear.
1. Baggy Jeans
If you want to wear streetwear, you need baggy jeans. Baggy denim is a quintessential staple piece in streetwear fashion. Like I said previously, it draws on men’s hip-hip fashion. The larger jeans make a statement in an outfit, even though they’re effortless, it’s just a pair of jeans! Add baggy jeans to any outfit and it instantly gives you a streetwear look.
2. Sweatpants
Alright, if you don’t want to wear baggy jeans, I have alternatives for you! My biggest alternative to baggy jeans is sweatpants. Sweatpants are also extremely popular in current streetwear and were known in men’s y2k fashion. Sweatpants are a fun choice because pretty much every person owns them because they’re so comfortable. I really recommend wearing a jogger styled sweatpants, where there’s a fit at the ankle. However, if you’re going to choose to wear sweatpants for your streetwear look, it won’t immediately scream “streetwear.” Therefore, you’re going to have to style more, I have you covered though, don’t worry.
3. Oversized T-Shirts
I know what you’re thinking, Wow Liana, this is the comfiest genre of fashion, and you’re right! Streetwear isn’t popular just because of its cool look, but its level of comfort. Pairing an oversized, graphic t-shirt with baggy jeans or sweatpants is the essential look in 2020 streetwear. Most commonly, people will wear this look because it widely represents the 90s hip-hop fashion era. An alternative to an oversized t-shirt is large crewnecks and/or hoodies.
4. Crop Tops
Fashion Tip: anytime you a wearing a baggy/loose bottom, like joggers, a cropped top will pair really well. This fashion tip 100% works in streetwear. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing loose-fitted clothing head-to-toe, I recommend pairing sweatpants and/or baggy jeans with a cropped top. This way you can show off some of your waist, and therefore add an hourglass shape to your body. Cropped hoodies, zip-ups, t-shirts or tank tops all work. You can choose whether or not the top is fitted or loose, as well!
5. Sneakers
Now, when I say sneakers, I don’t mean running sneakers. I am talking about sneakers with thicker bottoms, not made for running, and usually all white. Prime examples are Nike Air Force 1‘s and the Reebok Club C‘s (pictured to left), which makes complete sense because these shoes were really iconic in the 80s and 90s — where streetwear takes its inspiration from. These shoes really make the streetwear look. If you were to pair maybe Converse or Vans with a streetwear outfit, it would definitely look stylish, just not very modish streetwear. FYI: I own the Reebok Club C’s (they’re much cheaper than Air Forces) and they’re my favorite shoes. They go with any outfit and they’re insanely comfortable, I pretty much live in them – if you’re thinking of buying them, highly recommend!
6. Bucket Hats
Your bod’ is covered, so let’s get into accessories! The accessories in streetwear are really fun because they can be utilized in other outfits – so they’re not a waste of money. I know bucket hats have been really trendy that past few years, but they can be really hard to style because they can often look costumey. Bucket hats work extremely well in streetwear because of their 90s roots. However, if you don’t have a bucket hat or don’t feel comfortable wearing on, a baseball cap works as well!
7. Mini Purse
I have a really unhealthy addiction with purses, like really unhealthy addiction. Purses are just the perfect add-on to every outfit, and they especially look stylish in streetwear. In 2020 streetwear, a tiny purse is highly recommended because of its 90s look. It pairs really well with this genre because it doesn’t take away from the overall look either. Streetwear is known for its baggy, oversized look, so a larger purse could make the outfit look messy. A smaller purse helps balance out the shapelessness of the clothes.
8. Crew Socks
Yes, I am counting crew socks as an accessory. I really love how socks have managed to become an essential part of a fashion genre. Wearing white crew socks instead of your normal ankle sock genuinely helps make your outfit into a streetwear look. I cannot believe I’m writing about socks. If you are wondering though, Nike crew socks are the most common.
